Danielle's Baptism January 27, 2015 - 11:41am
This year at our first service on Pentecost, I was baptized in our pool. I also started 6th grade this year . I was kind of nervous because my new school is a really big school and sometimes it’s scary starting something new.

Daily Ritual November 30, 2014 - 9:19pm

Each time you light your first candle repeat Mary's phrase, "But how...?" as your prayer.

Wait and listen for God's response.

Each time you light your two candles let your mind roam over the past day and pray for those whose journey has crossed with yours.

Each time you light your three candles pray for long term peace to come to the people of Jerusalem and Gaza (and other conflict zones). Pray for more than 350,000 Jewish and Palestinian children severely psychologically traumatized by loss and the sights and sounds of war. For them the wait for peace has been unbearable.

Note that some traditions use a pink/rose candle and give this week "Gaudete (rejoice) Sunday." This comes from the first word in the Latin of Philippians 4:4,5: "Gaudete in Domino semper" ("Rejoice in the Lord always").

As you light your four candles this week think about the characters and what you need to work on to become more, or less, like them as you follow Jesus.

(Note that on Christmas day you can light your central Christ candle.)

When you light your five candles on Christmas day and after, think about and pray for children whose future is threatened by violence, in your city, and around the world. These are for people for whom waiting is fearful, uncertain, and spirit breaking.

The Christian Church season of Christmas (12 Days of Christmas) runs until January 6. You might like to keep lighting your candles, or just the Christ candle, through this time. We need Advent to keep us from having Christmas too soon, and we need the 12 days to stop us giving it up too quickly.

Luke 1:26-38 (The Message)

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the Galilean village of Nazareth to a virgin engaged to be married to a man descended from David. His name was Joseph, and the virgin’s name, Mary. Upon entering, Gabriel greeted her: Good morning! You’re beautiful with God’s beauty, Beautiful inside and out!
God be with you.

Luke 2:1-20 (The Message)
About that time Caesar Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Empire. This was the first census when Quirinius was governor of Syria. Everyone had to travel to his own ancestral hometown to be accounted for. So Joseph went from the Galilean town of Nazareth up to Bethlehem in Judah, David’s town, for the census. As a descendant of David, he had to go there. He went with Mary, his fiancée, who was pregnant.

Anthropocentrism vs. biocentrism and Christianity January 9, 2015 - 12:12am

Christianity holds that God created men and women as rulers over the natural world and gave us the responsibility to be earth's stewards. However, we have largely taken advantage of this responsibility and have wreaked havoc upon the planet. Other religions like Hinduism hold that we are all a part of creation, each creature with equal value.

Worship Fully

It starts with Jesus. It ends with Jesus. This is the holistic approach God had in mind for Christmas. It’s a season where we are called to put down our burdens and lift a song up to our God. It’s a season where love wins, peace reigns, and a king is celebrated with each breath. It’s the party of the year.

A Royal Priesthood January 19, 2015 - 9:33am
"But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people who are God's own possession.  You have become this people so that you may speak of the wonderful acts of the one who called you out of darkness into his amazing light.  Once you weren't a people, but now you are God's people.  Once you hadn't received mercy, but now you have received mercy." 1 Peter 2:9-10 CEB
